Sibutramine first appeared as anti-obesity drug in 1998 after the FDA gave its approval. In 2002 there has been 29 deaths that is linked to these drug but it seems no one take action except for Italy which has immediately ban the product. In 2009, European Medicine Evaluation Agency (EMEA) take action and ban Reductil in Europe after the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes (SCOUT) study. The review concluded that the cardiovascular risks of sibutramine outweigh its benefits. FDA seeing Europe has ban the product, they simply put a warning label in the back of the product saying people with existing heart condition shouldn't take it. In October 2010, After many petition to ban the drugs FDA finally agree to ban Meridia in the U.S and Canada. Many people regret FDA slow action and because of it many people will have irreversible heart disease. Australia has also ban the product in this same month. In November 2010, The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) ban 15 slimming product that has Sibutramine in China and Union Health Ministry from India also said that they would ban Sibutramine from their country. Those who have been using Sibutramine for short period it won't do any serious damage but for those who have been using it for more than 12 month the drugs can harm cardiac muscles and valves. The damage is also irreversible.
